No. 2 seed Simona Halep has locked up the first spot in the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank final after defeating Sara Errani in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Aviva Centre.
Halep went down an early break to start the match, but quickly rebounded to even the first set at 2-2. She managed to close out the contest in just over an hour and a half to advance to the championship match.
“I had very tough draw, and I didn’t expect to play final here. But you know, I wish to play ‑‑ to try to find a way to fight during the matches, and I think that was the most important thing this week. I had a great week,” said Halep following her win.
The Romanian, who holds 11 WTA titles and finished as runner-up at Roland Garros last year, will be playing in her first Rogers Cup final after previously making it only as far as the second round in 2011 and 2012.
In the final, she will face either world No. 1 Serena Williams or Belinda Bencic, the Swiss teen who has scored two wins over Top 10 players during her run at Rogers Cup. They will face off tonight in the evening session at 6:30 p.m. with the winner securing a match with Halep on Final Sunday at 1 p.m.
