Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova are the first doubles team into the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank final. The pair defeated French-Czech team Kristina Mladenovic and Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 7-6(5).
The contest was extended in the second set with Mattek-Sands and Safarova serving for the match, as Mladenovic and Pliskova saved a match point and ultimately leveled the set at 5-all. But the popular American-Czech team ensured there would be overtime, winning the second-set tiebreaker to take the match.
As a new pairing at the beginning of this year, Mattek-Sands and Safarova have taken the crown at the Australian Open and Roland Garros and advanced to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. They will be looking to claim their maiden Rogers Cup title when they face either No. 1 seeds Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza or Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik in the final on Sunday.
