In the opening match of Friday evening at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, world No. 1 Serena Williams defeated Roberta Vinci in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to secure her place in the semifinals.

“I don’t feel like I’m at my best or anywhere near it. But I feel like I’m going in the right direction and I want to keep that up,” said Williams following her win over Vinci.

Williams is into her third straight Rogers Cup semifinal in Toronto, having won the title in 2013 and 2011. She will meet Swiss teen Belinda Bencic for a place in the championship match, after the world No. 20 posted a quarter-final win over Ana Ivanovic. Bencic eliminated the former world No. 1 in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

“I think I was mentally really tough today,” Bencic said. “I felt amazing on the court, like everything worked. My legs were like so fast. And I was just in kind of a flow, and it just went really good. Yeah, I mean I wasn’t afraid to go for the shots as well. I didn’t think about the score. I was nervous, but I tried not to think about it, and I think it was just perfect today.”
