It looked as though reigning champion and No. 6 seed Agnieszka Radwanska was on her way to the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank semifinals after bageling Simona Halep in the first set on Friday. But the No. 2 seed battled back with the help of her Romanian fans to take the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 and seal her 300th WTA match win.
“Today when I was down 0‑5, they were supporting me like I was up 5‑0. So it was amazing, and they gave me power just to stay there, still fighting for the victory, you know. Sometimes you take the power from the crowd, and today helped me a lot. I stayed there very focused, and I said that I can do it with them,” said Halep following the win.
No. 15 seed Errani was the second player to book a spot in the semifinals, ousting qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Tsurenko was down 0-5 in the first set and climbed back to 4-5 before Errani ended her comeback and took the set. She closed out the match in just under an hour and a half. Errani will face world No. 3 Halep in the semifinal.
Canadians Carol Zhao and Sharon Fichman had their run come to an end, falling in the doubles quarter-finals to Kristina Mladenovic and Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. Mladenovic and Pliskova ousted the Canadians 6-2, 6-2.
Also advancing to the doubles semifinals are No. 4 seeds Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik. They eliminated Romanians Irina-Camelia Begu and Raluca Olaru 6-3, 6-2.
