Reigning champion Agnieszka Radwanska is still in contention for a second straight title at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, as she is into the final eight. Radwanska was pushed to three sets by Alize Cornet of France, but closed out the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. She will go head-to-head with the No. 2 seed here in Toronto, Simona Halep, in the quarters.
“I’m playing one of the best players now, and of course you always want to win,” Radwanska said of her next match against Halep. “It doesn’t matter what’s the ranking and who is your opponent. But it will not be an easy match. Even if it’s not going to be my way tomorrow, I just hope I can just play my best tennis. And we’ll see how it’s going to be. I just saw her playing today against [Angelique Kerber]. That was a really good match, so I know she is also in good form and playing good on the hard courts.”
In the opening match of the evening, world No. 1 Serena Williams ousted No. 16 seed Andrea Petkovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Though she said she was unimpressed with her match, saying she still has “a tremendous amount of improvement to do off the ground and everywhere else,” Williams took just over one hour to cruise through the match and earn her place in the quarters, where she meet Roberta Vinci.
No. 15 seed Sara Errani ousted former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to book herself a spot in the quarter-finals. Azarenka managed to save five match points but still fell to Errani. The Italian will face qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in the final eight.
Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic also sealed her spot in the quarter-finals after eliminating qualifier Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-3. Ivanovic will face Belinda Bencic in the final eight.
