On Thursday night at Uniprix Stadium, 20-year-old Alexander Zverev of Germany disposed of world no.24 Nick Kyrgios of Australia in two sets (6-4, 6-3) at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

With the win, he secured his quarterfinal berth in the Montréal Masters 1000. Waiting in the wings is Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Zverev and Kyrios, two of the Tour’s most talented players, fought a sometimes amusing battle of spectacular shots. In the end, the young German posted his first win against the Australian. Kyrgios had beaten him twice on the hard courts this season, in Indian Wells and Miami.

In the match, Kyrgios suffered from persistent left hip pain that considerably hindered his movements and forced him to call the trainer twice. Zverev was able to control the match and blast his powerful serves when he needed to.

On National Bank Court, Kevin Anderson quietly pursued his path and eliminated Sam Querrey of the US (6-4, 6-1) in 59 minutes. A finalist in Washington, the South African got one step closer to the world Top 20. Alexander Zverev, his rival in the quarterfinals, will be out to stop him.
