As qualifiers wrapped up, final pieces to the main draw puzzle emerged. Tomorrow, the quest for the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank title begins in earnest. So which matches are we most excited to see?
Petra Kvitova vs. Carla Suarez Navarro
There’s no better feel good story in tennis right now than Petra Kvitova. The two-time Grand Slam champion proved her determination to return and picked up a title in Birmingham this season. Carla Suarez Navarro, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 just over a year ago, brings her devastating backhand to the table. It’s a battle more typically seen in a quarterfinal. Regardless, it will be fun to watch.
Venus Williams vs. (Q) Irina Camelia-Begu
What is there left to say about Venus Williams? The seven-time Grand Slam champion has already muscled her way to two Grand Slam finals this year and remains one of the biggest threats on the WTA tour. Playing with the same enthusiasm she took the court with over two decades ago, the seasoned vet will showcase her skills under the lights on Monday night.
Lucie Safarova vs. (WC) Francoise Abanda
Montreal native Francoise Abanda will play the second match of the night session as she faces a tough task against Lucie Safarova. Abanda’s career is catching fire as she made the second round of the main draw at both Wimbledon and Roland-Garros after coming through qualifiers. In Washington DC, the young gun pushed to the R32 and is showing off fine form this summer.
Doubles Draw Released
Rogers Cup is never short on intriguing pairings for doubles. At first glance, we’ve spotted some not to miss teams that will take to the court.
Bouchard/Pliskova
The world No. 1 brings her booming serve while Canadian favorite Bouchard is sure to draw a crowd. No doubt the stands will be rowdy for this combination. Bouchard comes off a run all the way to the doubles final of the Citi Open with Sloane Stephens. Can her success translate over with Pliskova?
Konta/Svitolina
Known for her quick movement and devastation power, Svitolina exhibits no fear on the court as she dictates with even the most adept opponents. Her partner’s season hasn’t been too shabby either. Konta’s posted her biggest career victories, including a title in Miami and a run to the semifinals at Wimbledon. The Brit is right at home on hard court. When they combine forces, it will be interesting to see if fireworks happen.
Andreescu/Branstine
If you want a seat to see this duo, be sure to show up early. It’s a foregone conclusion these two Canadian teens are looking to make some noise. So break out the facepaint and prepare for some free swinging entertainment.
