For the very first time in his career, world no.52 Robin Haase of the Netherlands has reached the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event.
He secured the berth on Friday at Uniprix Stadium, when he defeated no.36 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). It was their fifth showdown and Haase’s first win in their head-to-head.
Fatigue set in for Schwartzman, who toppled Dominic Thiem in the second round and played four matches that went on for over two hours. In the second set, he was unable to find his game and get back in the match. Broken six times, the Argentine was no match for his opponent.
Haase has not won an ATP title in over five years. He took the crowns in Kitzbühel in 2011 and 2012 and played in the quarterfinals at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2012.
A solid doubles player, he found the holes in his rival’s game and accomplished a major feat he had not achieved in some time.
